The  United  Nations  Organization  (UNO) or simply the  United  Nations  (UN)  is an international organization whose aims are facilitating cooperation in international law and security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achievement of world peace. It was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries and to provide a platform for dialogue.
The  United  Nations Secretariat is headed by the Secretary-General whose duties include helping resolve international disputes, administering peacekeeping operations,
gathering information of the implementation of Security Council decisions, and consulting with member government regarding various initiatives.
The secretary-general is appointed by the General Assembly, after being recommended by the Security Council. There are no specific criteria for the post, but over the years it has
become accepted that the post will be held for one or two terms of five years, that it will
be appointed on the basis of geographical rotation, and that the Secretary-General will not
originate from one of the five permanent security member states.
The UN, after approval of the Security Council, sends peacekeepers to regions where armed conflict has recently ceased or paused to enforce the terms of peace agreements and to discourage combatants from resuming hostilities. Since the UN does not maintain its own military force, troops are voluntarily provided by member states of the UN. These are called the ‘Blue Helmets’ and they received the Noble Peace Prize for their achievements in 1988.
